Child safety and window blinds: what every parent should know

Loose cords and chains on window blinds pose a strangulation risk to young children. This is not a theoretical concern. Accidents have occurred in the UK, and regulations have tightened in response. Every parent and grandparent with children in the home should understand what safe options exist and how to eliminate the hazards from older blinds.
The danger is simple and specific. A loop of cord or chain hanging within reach of a child can become wrapped around a neck in seconds. Children playing near windows, climbing on furniture, or pulling at dangling cords are all at risk. Cot and bed placement near windows with corded blinds is a particular concern for infants and toddlers.
UK regulations now mandate that all new blinds sold must be safe by design, meaning they cannot have accessible looped cords. This applies to blinds sold since 2014 under the BS EN 13120 standard. However, many older blinds in homes pre-date this requirement and still have exposed cord loops.
Cordless blinds are the simplest solution. These operate with a spring mechanism or push-up/pull-down action, with no external cord at all. The blind is raised and lowered by hand directly on the bottom rail. Cordless operation is available for roller blinds, venetians, and pleated blinds in most standard sizes.
Motorised blinds eliminate cords entirely by a different route. A small motor raises and lowers the blind via remote control or app. There is nothing to pull, nothing to loop, and no accessible mechanism at child height. The operating cost is modest, and rechargeable battery motors avoid any wiring work.
Perfect Fit blinds are inherently child-safe. Because they clip into the window frame with no external brackets or cords, there is nothing loose, nothing dangling, and nothing a child can reach. They are an excellent default for any room where young children spend time, particularly bedrooms and playrooms.
If you have existing blinds with chains or cords that you are not ready to replace, interim safety devices are available. Chain tensioners screw into the wall and hold the chain taut against the window frame, preventing it from forming a loop. Cord cleats wrap excess cord high on the wall out of reach. These are free from most blind retailers and take two minutes to fit.
The bedrooms of children under five deserve the highest level of attention. Ensure the cot or bed is positioned away from any window blind cord. Ideally, replace any corded blind in a child's bedroom with a cordless or motorised alternative. The cost is modest compared to the risk eliminated.
We supply only child-safe blinds as standard. Every blind we fit meets or exceeds current safety regulations. During our free home survey, we check for existing hazards and can advise on making older blinds safer. For nurseries and children's rooms, we always recommend cordless or Perfect Fit solutions.
