Roller blinds vs vertical blinds - choosing the right style

Roller blinds vs vertical blinds - choosing the right style

Roller blinds and vertical blinds are two of the most popular window coverings in UK homes. They sit at similar price points, so the decision often comes down to window shape, room function, and personal taste.

Roller blinds wrap around a single tube at the top of the window. They pull down to cover the glass and roll back up when not needed. The mechanism is minimal and the result is a clean, modern look with the fabric sitting flat against the window.

Vertical blinds hang from a headrail in individual louvres that run from top to bottom. They draw sideways - left, right, or splitting to both sides - and the louvres rotate to control light angle. They are the natural partner for wide windows and patio doors.

For standard rectangular windows in bedrooms, kitchens, and bathrooms, rollers are the default choice. The compact headrail takes up little space. Blackout, moisture-resistant, and dimout fabrics are all readily available. Cleaning is straightforward - a damp cloth across the surface is usually sufficient.

For sliding doors, wide picture windows, and floor-to-ceiling glass, verticals tend to work better. The louvres glide in the same direction the door opens, so they never obstruct access. Rollers on a very wide span require either a single large blind - which can be heavy to operate - or multiple blinds with visible gaps between them.

Light control differs between the two. Vertical louvres can be angled to admit daylight while still screening the room from outside view. A roller blind is binary - it is either up or down, with no intermediate position unless you choose a day-and-night roller variant.

Maintenence is comparable. Roller fabrics wipe clean. Vertical louvres can be unhooked and washed individually if they pick up marks. Neither requires professional cleaning under normal use.

On aesthetics, rollers suit minimalist and contemporary interiors. Verticals can appear more utilitarian, but modern fabric ranges have improved their look significantly. Patterned and textured louvres now rival rollers for visual appeal.

We supply both roller and vertical blinds in hundreds of fabrics, all made to measure. Free measuring and fitting is included with every order.
