Skylight and roof window blinds: the complete buyer's guide

Roof windows bring exceptional natural light into loft conversions, top-floor bedrooms, and attic offices. But that same overhead glass creates problems that standard blinds cannot solve. Skylight blinds are engineered specifically for angled and overhead glazing, with tensioned systems that hold the fabric taut regardless of the window's pitch.

Compatibility is the first thing to establish. The two dominant roof window manufacturers in the UK are Velux and Fakro. Each uses proprietary frame dimensions, so a blind designed for a Velux GGL will not fit a Fakro FTP. You need the window code, which is printed on a metal plate at the top of the window when you open it. This code tells the blind manufacturer the exact size and profile required.

Blackout is the most requested feature for skylight blinds, and for good reason. A roof window above a bed lets in light from the earliest hours of dawn, which arrives before 5 am in a British summer. A true blackout skylight blind uses side channels that seal the fabric edges against the frame, eliminating the light gaps that plague standard roller blinds.

Solar-reflective fabrics are the second priority. Roof windows face the sky directly and absorb an enormous amount of solar energy, particularly on south-facing slopes. A reflective-coated blind can reject over 70 percent of incoming solar heat, keeping the room beneath noticeably cooler without air conditioning.

The choice between manual and electric operation depends on window placement. If the skylight is within comfortable arm's reach, a manual rod-operated blind is simple and reliable. If the window sits above a stairwell, high on a vaulted ceiling, or in a room where convenience matters, a battery-powered motor with remote control is the practical choice. Some electric skylight blinds integrate with Velux's own smart home system, allowing app control and scheduling.

Pleated blinds are popular for skylights because the concertina fold sits neatly in a compact stack when raised, maximising the clear glass area. They also run smoothly on tensioned cords that prevent the fabric from bowing away from the glass on steeper pitches.

Roller blinds offer a cleaner, more minimal aesthetic on skylights. The fabric wraps around a cassette at the top and runs in side channels. They work best on windows pitched between 15 and 75 degrees. Beyond that range, the fabric may not track evenly without additional tensioning.

Duo or day-and-night blinds combine a translucent layer for daytime privacy with a blackout layer for sleeping. On a skylight this means you can soften harsh overhead sun during the day and achieve full darkness at night, all from a single blind unit.

Installation of skylight blinds is more involved than standard window blinds. The blind must be precisely sized to the window code, the brackets must align with the frame profiles, and the fabric must track within channels to prevent light leakage. We handle this entirely, measuring, ordering to the exact specification, and fitting. Every skylight blind we supply comes with a manufacturer's guarantee and our own fitting warranty.
