Cascade vs Stacked Folds
Neither style is universally "best" — it comes down to personal preference and the character of your chosen fabric. Your surveyor will show you both during your free home visit.
Roman Cascade
Cascade is the default fold style on our Nuvo Roman range, folding in a flowing, overlapping waterfall effect for a soft, relaxed appearance.
Roman Stacked
Stacked folds neatly and compactly behind itself as the blind is raised, giving a crisper, more tailored look.
Choosing the Fabric
Our fabric range spans plains and textures, jacquards, woven and printed designs, prints, patterns, florals, geometrics, stripes, embroidered designs, abstracts and voiles, with a curated selection of plain and textured fabrics within our Nuvo collection. Selected ranges also include fabrics containing recycled polyester.
Not every fabric suitable for curtains is automatically suitable for a Roman blind — suitability depends on the fabric's weight, width, stability, pattern repeat, design direction, folding behaviour, lining compatibility and whether joins are required. Voile and sheer fabrics are available unlined only.
For a layered, coordinated look, Roman blinds are often paired with curtains in a complementary or matching fabric. Your surveyor can help you choose fabrics that work well together during your home visit.
Patterns, Joins & Coordinating Multiple Blinds
Where several blinds use the same patterned fabric, the starting position of the design can be coordinated where the fabric width, repeat and manufacturing method allow. Exact fold, seam and side-pattern alignment cannot always be guaranteed.
Fabric joins may be required on wider blinds, depending on the usable fabric width, the blind width, the pattern repeat and the manufacturing method. Any visible join will be discussed with you before you order.
Lining & Light-Control Options
Choose from unlined construction, or Premier, Satin and Blockout linings — each offering a different balance of light control and privacy.
Unlined
Face fabric only, for a lighter feel and softer light diffusion. Voile and sheer fabrics are available unlined only.
Premier
A lightweight, entry-level lining in White or Ivory. Our default lining option on the Nuvo range.
Satin
A premium quality lining in White or Ivory, for added luxury.
Blockout
A heavyweight lining in White or Ivory that prevents or substantially reduces light passing through the face fabric, and also acts as an insulating layer.
Blockout Lining vs Total Blackout
Blockout lining prevents or substantially reduces light passing through the main fabric panel, but a Roman blind does not seal the window opening.
Light may still remain around the sides, above and below the blind, at headrail or fitting gaps, or where the recess or window itself is uneven — this is inherent to how a Roman blind is fitted, not a fault.

Standard, No-Drill & Cassette System Options
Roman blinds are available in three system options, each suited to different windows and requirements. Your surveyor will confirm which systems are suitable for your windows during your free home visit.
Standard Roman System
A lightweight, discreet headrail that sits behind the face fabric — an open system with manual chain control (right as standard, or left), fitted to a universal top or face fix bracket.
No-Drill Roman System
A selected recess-only system using a hidden spring-loaded mechanism with anti-slip silicone pads. Suitable for firm-backed wood, PVC or concrete — not hollow plasterboard. Maximum weight 10kg.
Cruze Cassette Roman System
A selected system that conceals the mechanism within a cassette headrail, available manually or motorised, in a matching fabric cover or uncovered White, Silver or Anthracite finish.
Manual & Motorised Operation
Roman blinds are operated manually as standard, with selected systems available motorised.
Manual Operation
A side chain raises and lowers the blind, with a P-clip safety device fitted as part of the installation.
Motorised Operation
Selected Roman blinds can be motorised for powered raise and lower operation. Motor choice depends on the blind size, construction and finished weight, and is confirmed for the selected system. Evidenced motors are rechargeable battery powered, with remote-control operation available — compatibility with wider smart-home systems is not guaranteed across every motor and is confirmed during survey.
Recess vs Outside-Recess Fitting
Roman blinds can be fitted inside or outside the window recess, depending on your window and preference.
Inside the Recess
A neat, contained appearance. Your surveyor will assess recess depth, handles, vents, opening windows, the fold stack and headrail or cassette clearance before recommending this option.
Outside the Recess (Face Fix)
May increase coverage of the window opening and can allow more of the opening to remain clear when the blind is raised, depending on the wall or fixing surface and any surrounding obstructions. Not a guaranteed way to improve light exclusion, and should not be presented as a blackout solution.
Understanding the Fold Stack
When raised, a Roman blind forms a visible stack of folded fabric at the top of the window. How much space this takes up varies by the blind's drop, fold style, fabric and lining, and by the construction method used.
This is particularly worth planning for on doors, inward-opening windows and shallow recesses, where the stack needs to clear handles and opening furniture. Your surveyor will factor this into your measurements during your free home visit.

Living Rooms
A strong application for fabric, colour and texture, bringing warmth and character without the volume of curtains.
Bedrooms
A good application; Blockout lining can meaningfully reduce light but is not a total blackout solution.
Dining Rooms
A strong decorative application, with the structured fold creating an elegant backdrop when raised.
Home Offices
Can soften daylight; unlike Venetian or Day & Night systems, Roman blinds don't provide continuous fine slat or band adjustment.
Kitchens & Bathrooms Guidance
Roman blinds are a fabric product, so kitchens and bathrooms need a little extra thought compared with living spaces.
Kitchens
Best suited to a well-ventilated position, away from the hob, sink and direct splashing. Fabric can absorb grease, odours and steam over time — a wipe-clean blind may be a better fit in more demanding spots.
Bathrooms
Generally not our first recommendation, as persistent moisture and condensation can affect the fabric, lining and construction. Our Faux Wood blinds are usually a more practical choice for high-humidity rooms.
Child Safety — Part of Every Blind Installation
We will not leave a blind installed without the required child-safety device.
For manual Roman systems, the operating chain requires the appropriate safety arrangement — verified Nuvo systems include a P-clip device. The exact chain or control safety solution depends on the system and installation.
Motorisation can remove the accessible manual operating loop, but motorisation itself does not automatically make every installation child safe — your surveyor will confirm and fit the correct arrangement for your chosen system as part of installation.
Care & Cleaning
Care instructions depend on the selected fabric and supplier. Several current Nuvo fabrics are machine washable at 30°C, while care instructions vary by fabric and selected ranges may also permit dry cleaning. Always follow the care instructions for the chosen fabric.
For routine refreshing, a soft upholstery brush or suitable vacuum attachment may be used where permitted. Your surveyor can confirm the specific care instructions for your chosen fabric when you order.
