Blackout Shutters — Enhanced Darkness with an Integrated Cellular Blind

Blackout Shutters combine our interior shutter panels with an integrated cellular blockout blind, fitted within the shutter frame for substantially enhanced darkness and greater light reduction than shutters alone. This is not a Total Blackout solution, and some residual light may remain depending on the installation.

On one of our verified shutter systems, the blockout blind is a 25mm white cellular fabric fitted behind the shutter panels within a four-sided shutter frame. The cellular fabric blocks light passing through the material itself and has an internal foil wrap, and its honeycomb structure also supports thermal insulation — though a small clearance around the blind relative to the frame means the system should never be described as sealed or gap-free.

How Blackout Shutters Work

Blackout Shutters bring together two separate elements, working as one system within a single four-sided frame. The shutter panels operate exactly as a standard shutter, with louvres that tilt open and closed to control daylight and privacy in the usual way.

Behind the shutter panels, within the same frame, sits the integrated cellular blind. It can be lowered independently of the louvres for substantially enhanced darkness — the two elements are operated separately, working together rather than as a single mechanism. As set out below, this is not a Total Blackout solution.

The exact frame and blind configuration depends on the shutter material and range selected — confirmed during survey.

How it works

Blackout Shutters Are Not Total Blackout

It's an important distinction, and one we want to be upfront about before you order.

Standard Shutters

Shutter louvres and panels control daylight and privacy, but are not designed to exclude light when closed — light passes around and between louvres in the usual way.

Blackout Shutters

Adding the integrated cellular blockout blind behind the shutter panels substantially increases light reduction and creates enhanced darkness. A small clearance around the blind means some residual light can still remain, depending on the installation and configuration.

Total Blackout Blind

A separate, purpose-designed framed screen product. On qualifying dark grey or black configurations, correctly surveyed and installed, it can achieve full blackout — genuine total blackout is supported on that product, not on shutters.

The Integrated Cellular Blockout Blind

One of our verified shutter systems uses a 25mm white cellular blockout blind, fitted behind the shutter panels within the shutter frame. The honeycomb cells block light passing through the fabric itself and include an internal foil wrap, and the same honeycomb structure supports thermal insulation.

A small clearance remains around the blind relative to the shutter frame, which is why the system is described as substantially enhanced darkness rather than a sealed or gap-free installation. Other verified shutter systems may vary in their exact blind construction and clearance — your surveyor will confirm the specification that applies to your chosen range.

Well Suited to Bedrooms and Light-Sensitive Rooms

Blackout Shutters are well suited to rooms where reducing incoming light matters — bedrooms, nurseries, home cinema and media rooms, and rooms used for daytime rest such as shift-work sleep.

The shutter louvres and the integrated cellular blind work together to give you daylight control and enhanced darkness in the same system, without needing a separate blind fitted alongside your shutters.

Frame and Window Divisions Matter

Blackout Shutters always require a four-sided shutter frame, so the blind can be housed and guided correctly within it — this differs from some standard shutter installations that don't need a frame on every side.

On the verified system described here, a single blind opening is supported up to 1600mm wide. Wider openings require a T-post — a vertical divider that splits the window into separate blind openings, each with its own blind — up to a maximum overall width of 3500mm with T-posts fitted. Minimum blind width is 300mm, minimum height is 300mm, and maximum height is 2000mm.

These figures are specific to the verified system described here — other shutter ranges and materials may have different size and configuration limits. Your surveyor will confirm the exact frame layout, T-post requirement and size limits that apply to your windows.

What We Check During Survey

Your surveyor measures each window opening and confirms whether a single blind or a T-post split configuration is needed, based on the verified width limits for your chosen system.

We confirm which of your selected shutter material and range supports the integrated blackout option, the available louvre sizes, the frame requirements, and whether manual or electric operation is available for your configuration.

What Level of Darkness Should You Expect?

Blackout Shutters are designed to substantially reduce light and give you a noticeably darker room than shutters alone — but as set out above, this is not a Total Blackout solution. A small clearance around the integrated blind means some residual light can remain, particularly around the edges of the frame.

How dark your room becomes depends on your specific installation — the shutter material and range, the window size and configuration, and whether a T-post split is required. Your surveyor will give you an honest assessment during your home visit, and will point you towards our Total Blackout Blind system if genuine total blackout is what you need.
