Café Style Shutters for Bay Windows
Café style works particularly well on Victorian and Edwardian bay-fronted properties, giving each bay section its own defined shutter line while keeping the upper glass open across the whole bay.
Because the shutters are fixed directly to the window, a buildout may be required where the lower section of the window has handles, so the frame can clear them. Your surveyor will assess this — along with the exact panel configuration for each bay section — during your free home visit.

A Characterful Look, Day or Evening
Café style shutters keep their architectural charm after dark too — the lower panels still frame the room while the open upper glass keeps a view of the evening sky, particularly effective in dining rooms and other rooms with warm evening lighting.
Light and Privacy, Day and Night
Because café style shutters cover the lower portion of the window only, the top edge of the shutter panels is visible, and the glass above is never covered. In daylight this generally gives an effective balance of privacy and light for most street-facing rooms.
At night, the uncovered upper glass does not provide privacy — if a room is lit in the evening, it remains possible to see through the upper section from outside, whatever material or louvre size you choose. If more complete evening privacy matters for a particular room, curtains, Roman blinds, roller blinds, or a Full Height or Tier on Tier configuration are all worth discussing with your surveyor.
Café style shutters are also not a blackout solution — even with the lower louvres fully closed, the open upper glass means the window is never fully covered. If blackout is a priority for a room, ask your surveyor about our dedicated Blackout Shutters instead.
What We Check During Your Survey
Windows are not always perfectly square, so your surveyor measures each one at multiple points to get an accurate fit.
We also check window handles and opening sashes, the most appropriate frame configuration for your window, and any nearby obstructions — skirting, coving, dado rails and similar features — before any order is placed.
