How it works
How Full Height Shutters Work: Mid Rail, Split Tilt and Tier on Tier
A Full Height shutter is one panel arrangement covering the whole window. Within that, there are a few different ways the louvres and panels can be controlled — and it helps to see the difference rather than just read about it.
Mid Rail
A physical horizontal rail within a Full Height panel, dividing it into two sections. It may be structurally required on taller panels, or chosen to align with a window transom. A mid rail does not make the upper and lower sections independently opening panels — the panel still opens and closes as one unit.
Split Tilt
Allows the upper and lower groups of louvres within the same panel to tilt independently, without needing a mid rail. This gives separate light and privacy control at different heights within one continuous panel.
Tier on Tier
A different configuration from Full Height: two separate shutter panel sets — an upper tier and a lower tier — that can be opened independently of each other.
Mid Rail and Split Tilt both work within a single Full Height panel. Tier on Tier is a separate configuration, using two independently opening panel sets.

Centre Tilt Rod
A visible tilt rod positioned at the centre of the panel, used to adjust the louvres for light and privacy.
Offset Tilt Rod
A visible tilt rod positioned towards one side of the panel, on selected materials and ranges.
Clearview / Hidden Tilt
A rear-mounted control that links the louvres while leaving the front of the panel visually uncluttered.
Concealed / In-Stile Control
The operating mechanism is built into the shutter stile itself, with no visible front or rear tilt rod.
Light and Privacy
Full Height shutters are a light-diffusing product rather than a total-blackout product. With the louvres closed, light is significantly reduced, but some light can remain around the louvre and frame edges. Split Tilt or a suitable Mid Rail arrangement can give you separate control over the upper and lower louvres, so you can adjust light and privacy at different heights within the same window.

Suitable Rooms and Window Types
Full Height shutters suit a wide range of rooms and window types — living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms, home offices, bay windows and wider windows alike, working equally well in modern and more traditional interiors.
Suitability for kitchens and bathrooms depends on the material you choose — natural wood is not recommended for persistently humid rooms. Faux Wood, PVC and Composite are better suited to consistently moisture-prone spaces; your surveyor can advise which material fits your room during your free home visit.
What We Check During Your Survey
Windows are not always perfectly square, so your surveyor measures each one at multiple points to get an accurate fit.
We also check recess depth, window handles and opening sashes, and any nearby obstructions — skirting, coving, dado rails and similar features — that could affect the layout.
Where your window has a transom, this can influence where a mid-rail is positioned. Your exact material, configuration and fixing method is confirmed before you place your order.
